Preserved Moss Wall Art: Materials & Craft
What is preserved moss wall art?
Preserved moss wall art is a wall panel made from real, natural moss that has been harvested and treated with a food-safe, glycerin-based solution. The process replaces the moss's natural sap, so the plant keeps its soft texture and rich green colour permanently — without staying alive. That is what makes our moss wall decor completely maintenance free.
Is the moss alive?
No. Every piece is made with preserved moss, not living moss. It does not grow, does not need water, soil or sunlight, and will never wilt or die. That is the key difference between preserved moss wall art and a living green wall — you get the same natural greenery with none of the irrigation, drainage or plant maintenance.
Is it real moss or artificial?
It is 100% real, natural moss. Our panels are built from genuine preserved reindeer moss, bun moss and sheet moss — never plastic or fabric imitations. Because it is a natural material, no two pieces of moss art are ever identical.
How long does preserved moss last?
In normal indoor conditions, preserved moss keeps its colour and texture for many years — typically 8 to 10 years or more. Longevity depends mostly on humidity and light: kept away from direct sunlight and damp air, a preserved moss wall panel stays vibrant far longer.
Does moss wall art purify the air?
No, and we would rather be honest about it. Preserved moss is no longer biologically active, so it does not filter or purify air the way a living plant does. What it does offer is the visual calm of biophilic wall decor, a soft natural texture, and a gently sound-absorbing surface — with none of the watering, soil or plant care.
What is biophilic design, and how does moss art fit in?
Biophilic interior design is the practice of bringing natural materials, textures and greenery into the spaces we live and work in, because contact with nature makes a room feel calmer. Moss wall art is one of the simplest ways to do it: it delivers real, organic greenery on a wall where a plant would never survive — no light, no water, no soil.
Do moss panels help with sound and acoustics?
Preserved moss has a soft, irregular surface that absorbs some high-frequency sound and reduces echo, which is why it is popular in offices, restaurants and reception areas. It is a sound-absorbing surface, not soundproofing — it will soften a room's acoustics, but it will not block noise between rooms.
Does it smell?
No. Preserved moss is odourless. You may notice a faint earthy scent for the first day or two after unboxing, which fades quickly.
Is it safe for people with allergies?
Preserved moss produces no pollen and no spores, so it is generally far better tolerated than living plants, and it does not attract soil-borne pests. If you have a specific plant or chemical sensitivity, we recommend checking with your doctor first.
Is it pet and child friendly?
The materials are non-toxic, but our pieces are wall-mounted decorative artwork and are not intended to be handled, chewed or eaten. We recommend hanging them out of reach of small children and pets.
Which materials and frames do you use?
Depending on the design: preserved reindeer moss, bun moss, sheet moss and preserved ferns, mounted on a solid wood or MDF backing. Our wood wall art pieces use olive wood, reclaimed wood and driftwood. Frame finishes include Natural / Raw Wood, Light Walnut, Dark Walnut, Cinnamon Wood, Black Wood and Black Metal.
Why does my piece look slightly different from the photos?
Because every piece is handmade with a natural material. Moss density, tone and texture vary slightly from panel to panel, and wood grain is never repeated. Your artwork will match the style and colour family shown, but the exact pattern is unique to you — that is the whole point of handmade wall art.
Caring for Your Moss Wall Decor
How do I care for moss wall art?
You don't, really — that is why it is called maintenance-free wall art. No watering, no misting, no feeding, no trimming. Just hang it and enjoy it. If dust settles over time, blow it off gently with a hairdryer on the cool, low setting, or use a soft brush or feather duster.
Do I need to water or mist it?
Never. Water is the one thing that will damage preserved moss. Do not spray, mist or wash it — this is genuinely a no-water wall decor.
Does it need sunlight?
No. It needs no light at all to survive, which is why it works beautifully in hallways, windowless offices and dim corners. Avoid strong direct sunlight though — prolonged UV exposure will slowly fade the green.
Will the colour fade over time?
Kept out of direct sunlight, the colour stays rich for years. In a very bright, sun-facing spot the green will gradually lighten. If your only wall option faces the sun, tell us before ordering and we will suggest a design that ages more gracefully.
Can I hang it in a bathroom or kitchen?
A normal, well-ventilated bathroom or kitchen is usually fine, as long as the piece is away from direct steam and splashes. Avoid consistently humid or wet spots — inside a shower enclosure, a steam room, or above a stovetop. Sustained high humidity can affect the preserved fibres.
Can I use it outdoors or on a covered patio?
We do not recommend it. Our pieces are designed for indoor use. Rain, frost and swings in humidity will shorten their life considerably.
Rooms, Styling & Design
Which rooms does moss wall art work best in?
Almost anywhere indoors. It is most often chosen as living room wall decor above a sofa or sideboard, as office and home office wall decor behind a desk or on a video-call background, and as entryway wall decor where a plant would get no light. It also works beautifully in bedrooms, dining rooms and hallways — and because it needs no sunlight, it is one of the few forms of greenery that suits a windowless room.
Does it suit modern, Scandinavian or Japandi interiors?
Yes — the organic texture and muted green palette sit naturally in Scandinavian, Japandi, minimalist and organic modern schemes, and the darker walnut and black frames work well in contemporary and luxury interiors. If you send us a photo of the room, we will suggest the frame finish that fits your palette best.
Do you offer round, large or framed moss wall art?
Yes. Our collection includes round moss wall art, framed panels in six frame finishes, and large statement pieces sized for a full feature wall. If you need a shape or scale you cannot see on the site, we can make it to order.
Is moss wall art suitable for renters?
Very. It requires no plumbing, no lighting and no permanent alteration to the room, and small to medium panels can be mounted with heavy-duty adhesive strips instead of screws — see the installation section below.
Sizes, Frames & Custom Orders
What size should I choose?
As a rule of thumb, wall art looks best when it fills roughly two-thirds of the free wall space, or two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Above a standard sofa, most customers choose a large or extra-large piece. For an entryway, a narrow hallway or the space between two windows, a medium or round piece usually works better. Send us a photo of your wall with rough measurements and we will recommend a size.
Do you make custom sizes?
Yes — custom moss wall art is one of the things we do best. Message us with your dimensions, the room, and the frame finish you like, and we will send you a quote and a production timeline. Custom shapes, colour mixes and multi-panel layouts are all possible.
Can you make a moss logo or company name sign?
Yes. Moss logo walls and 3D lettering for reception areas, offices, hotels and restaurants are available as custom orders. Send us your logo file and the wall dimensions for a quote.
What frame options are available?
Natural / Raw Wood, Light Walnut, Dark Walnut, Cinnamon Wood, Black Wood and Black Metal. Some designs are also available unframed for a softer, borderless look.
Can I order a set or a multi-panel arrangement?
Yes. Triptychs and multi-panel sets are available on selected designs, and we can build a custom arrangement for a specific wall. Multi-panel pieces ship as separate panels with a spacing guide.
Installing Your Moss Wall Panel
How heavy are the pieces?
Our panels are built on a lightweight backing and are much lighter than they look — comparable to a framed canvas of the same size. The exact weight is listed on each product page.
How do I hang it?
Each piece arrives ready to hang, with mounting hardware fitted to the back. For most panels, two wall anchors and screws — or a French cleat on larger sizes — are all you need. A short installation guide is included in the box.
Will it work on drywall, concrete or brick?
Yes, all three. Use the anchor type suited to your wall: plasterboard anchors for drywall, and a masonry drill bit with wall plugs for concrete or brick. For heavier or extra-large pieces, mounting into a stud is always the safest choice.
Can I hang it without drilling?
For small and medium pieces, heavy-duty adhesive strips rated well above the artwork's weight usually work well on smooth, clean, painted walls. We do not recommend adhesive mounting for large or extra-large panels.
Do you help with commercial installations?
For large projects — hotel lobbies, office receptions, restaurants and spas — we can advise your contractor and provide a full mounting specification. Contact us with your project details.

Returns, Damage & Cancellations
Can I return my order?
Yes — non-custom products may be returned within 30 days of delivery. The item must be unused, unmounted, in its original condition and in its original packaging, and the return must be authorised by us in advance. Email mosswalldecor@gmail.com with your order number and we will send you a return authorisation and the correct return address.
Who pays for return shipping?
Return shipping is paid by the customer, unless the item arrived damaged or defective or was not the item you ordered — in those cases we cover it. We recommend a tracked and insured service, as we cannot refund items lost or damaged on their way back to us. Original shipping charges are non-refundable.
Can I return a custom piece?
Custom and personalised orders cannot be returned, because they are made specifically for you and cannot be resold. Please confirm your measurements and finish carefully before ordering — and ask us first if you are unsure.
My item arrived damaged. What do I do?
Contact us as soon as possible — ideally within 48 hours of delivery, as this lets us file a claim with the carrier — with your order number, photos of the damaged item and photos of the packaging. We will review the claim and arrange a replacement or refund where appropriate. This 48-hour window helps us act quickly; it does not limit your statutory rights regarding faulty goods.
I'm in the EU or UK — what are my rights?
Consumers in the European Union and the United Kingdom have a statutory right to withdraw from an order within 14 days of receiving it, without giving a reason. Our 30-day return window is offered in addition to that right and does not limit it. The statutory right of withdrawal does not apply to goods made to your specification or clearly personalised. To withdraw, email mosswalldecor@gmail.com.
How long do refunds take?
Once approved, refunds are issued to the original payment method within 5–10 business days.
Can I cancel my order?
Orders can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase. After production has started, cancellation may not be possible.
